Body Freedom is a luxurious South Melbourne day spa, housed in a lovely 3 storey, 1850’s refurbished hosiery mill property. The interior is warm, traditional yet with a contemporary edge. Our rooms are generous in size with open fireplaces, high ceilings and boast comfortable showers.
We aren’t your average run of the mill Melbourne Day Spa and no two treatments are the same. This is due to our commitment to provide you with personal and customised service. Each treatment is tailored to suit your needs and exceed your expectations. We already know that we’re the best day spa in the city, and we’ve even been praised by the likes of Rebecca Judd for treating her to her favourite pregnancy massage.
For massage, we consider all aspects of how you are feeling, muscular tension, injuries and tailor the treatment for you. For facials we analyse your skin type, history, and concerns before we develop a treatment plan for you that day. Once we have consulted and discussed the treatment plan, then it is your time to relax. We do not talk during the treatment as this is your time to relax.
We understand that a Day Spa treatment is all about relaxation and feeling refreshed. Our therapists are from many different specialty areas and specialist products sourced from brands who have environmental and organic benefits in mind and get results.
Our treatments are popular with men and women from all age groups. In fact, over 35% of our clients are men and that is lowered by the great following we have for pregnancy massage.
Body Freedom serves up a 5-star luxury experience similar to a top-level restaurant that is known for amazing food and an eclectic environment and without waiter attitude… that is us! And we pride ourselves in delivering personal and tailored treatments, no stock standard massage routine that is tedious and used on every client.. that is not us. Our staff are here to help you relax.
We have 10 spa treatment rooms over 4 storeys of the refurbished hosiery mill. Some have open fireplaces, so are warm and cosy for the cooler months, however all have cooling for the warmer months. Most spa treatment rooms are up or down stairs, so if stairs are an issue, we do have a room on the ground floor.
For groups, we have a wonderful lounge space that can be set up with champagne and platters. We can cater for up to 20 people with 10 people having treatments at a time while the rest chill with a drink and food.
Body Freedom was founded in 2003 as Body Freedom Urban Spa Retreat by Jacqueline Johnston and Sue Homewood. We only had a few treatment rooms and a large area on the top floor that we used for yoga and workshops. We had a vision of creating a wellness spa & clinic that combined the best of clinical treatments in the luxury of a spa. Yoga complemented our treatments as the mindfulness and gentle movement are needed by many in this modern age.
Jacqueline Johnston is the designer of most of our treatments and is responsible for overseeing all training at the day spa. She has a bachelor of nursing, masters in holistic health (USA), remedial massage therapist and beauty therapist. As well as experience in midwifery, she has a post graduate qualifications in pregnancy massage and lymphatic. From her nursing days and working at Omega Institute in the USA, she has always felt that relaxation through mindfulness, massage, quietness is the perfect environment to compliment therapeutic treatment to help with mobility and functionality. So she created Body Freedom Urban Spa & Clinic. A combination of luxurious spa treatments with clinical massage or skin treatments.
Sue Homewood joined the business to manage the business side of it. She had a background in the corporate world and could look after the business side while Jacqueline focused on treatments, clients, training and the team. Sue was keen to create a spa that had more substance than a hotel spa. In other words, you could get a really good remedial massage in a luxury spa environment or a specialist deep cleaning facial. So between the two of them they embarked on a journey to create such a place. Sue had personal experience while working in the corporate world of needing to find avenues to manage stress, deadlines and conflicting priorities as well as injuries from previous incidents like car accidents that had left her with neck and back issues that required technical remedial massage. So could see the need for a day spa like this.
It became very busy and lots of therapists, and Kathryn Jones joined them to look after the all aspects of operations and daily running of the business. Kathryn has many years of experience in luxury spa and managing 5 star service and large teams of experienced therapists. Also Kathryn had experience running her own wellness business in the past so was appreciative of the struggles that can occur with a small privately owned business.
